Details

One of only two coins designed by America's most acclaimed sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (March 1, 1848 - August 3, 1907) this $10 gold coin is one of the most exquisite gold coins our nation has ever struck.

The obverse (front) of the coin displays an image of an Indian chief adorning a traditional headdress and the year of mintage. Thirteen stars representing the nation's 13 original colonies arc above Liberty's head. The reverse (back) depicts a proud Bald Eagle puffing its chest as it stands among olive branches.

There are two main types of Indian Head Eagles. The first is the No Motto or Type 1, which has a few varieties, with and without wire rims (also called rounded rims), periods before and after the motto, and a no periods variety. The second type has the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added to the reverse left field. The coins of this type were minted mid 1908 to the end of the series in 1933. Since the change to add the motto was made in the middle of the year, 1908 had both the No Motto and Motto on Reverse types.
